A coin, your hand, and a photograph.
Before you begin
- Rest your hand flat on a table, palm down, fingers slightly apart.
- Place a coin flat on the same surface — a quarter, penny, nickel or dime all work. On the table, never resting on your hand.
- Photograph straight down from above, in even, indirect light — near a window is ideal. No flash: it glares off glossy nails and washes out the coin.
- Photograph your thumb separately — lying flat, it turns sideways and cannot be measured with the rest.
The coin gives us the scale. Everything else follows from it.
Your photographs are read once to take the measurement. They are not stored.

The first is all we need. The second and third sharpen the reading — worth the extra minute if you are between sizes.
Any US coin works — a quarter, penny, nickel or dime. Each has an exact known width, and we recognise which one you used. Lay it flat on the table, face up, never on your hand.

Measuring with tape
- Apply a piece of clear tape across your nail.
- Mark both ends of your nail on the tape, where the nail meets the skin at each side.
- Peel the tape off and measure between the marks with a tape measure.
Measure all five. Widths in millimetres:
Between two sizes, take the larger. A set that sits slightly wide can be filed to the nail; one that sits narrow cannot be made to fit.
